A Day of Remembering

On this first day we invite women to take time to remember who we are as women,
to remember the contributions of untold millions of women
who have bravely gone before us and who have helped pave the way
to the creation of this moment in time,
to remember our connection to each other and to the planet,
to remember that when we work together toward a common goal,
we are powerful beyond measure.

There are many ways you can participate in the intention for this day.  Here are some ideas to help get your creative process flowing:

  • Take some time to focus on who YOU are to the people in your lives. Make a list of your gifts and talents, your strengths and contributions to the people around you. In your own silent moment, acknowledge your contribution to this world.

  • Set aside some time to look at photos from your life and remember who you were at the various stages of your own development, to remember who you have been, what you have experienced and what you have learned on the journey.

  • Make a phone call and ask to hear a story from the life of your mother .... and her mother and her mother. Remember these ancestors who have made it possible for you to be here, who have created the culture in which you have been able to grow into your potential. Remember the challenges in the context of how they have required you to grow stronger.

  • Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper about the contributions women have made to family, community and culture throughout history. Send a press release to radio and television outlets in advance, letting them know you are an expert on women's issues and available to be interviewed on-air for International Women's Day coverage.

  • Organize a mother/daughter event in your community, with the focus on the contributions made by the generations of women who came before us.

  • Take a half hour to explore the history of women on the Internet. Learn something you did not know about a woman who provided leadership in the realm of spirituality, education, politics or service in your culture.

  • Learn something about the role of women in another culture, one with which you are unfamiliar.
  • Light a candle in honor of the millions of women who have bravely sacrificed their freedom, their safety, their lives to take a stand for peace and justice anywhere in the world. Organize a rally in your community so hundreds of women can light their candles together.
